Skin Health for Fall
When the weather outside changes so should your skincare routine. Colder weather often brings drier skin. If you want to combat dry skin this season, then follow these tips for healthy, glowing skin throughout the fall and winter months ahead.
Tip #1: Continue to Use Sunscreen
Many think that once the hot weather of summer is gone that they can stop using sunscreen, but this is not the case. Your skin is susceptible to sun damage every day of the year, even on overcast days. It is important to use sunscreen and/or products that include an SPF to shield your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Sunscreen should be applied to the face, neck and chest area especially as those see the most contact with the sun’s rays and are most vulnerable. An SPF of 30 or higher is recommended. Also be sure to choose a product with both UVA and UVB protection.
Tip #2: Inventory Your Products
Our skincare routines in the summer can differ greatly from our skin care routines during the fall and winter months. Because of that it is important to inventory the products that you currently use and swamp them out for more suitable products to use during the months ahead. It may be time to pack away your self-tanning lotions and oil striping cleansers. Swap out harsh cleansers for more gentle cleansers that won’t remove too much moisture from the skin. You also may want to forego using a toner as well if this is a product that you use during the summer months. A good rule of thumb is to move away from the products that will remove moisture and choose products that will add moisture to your skin.
Tip #3: Don’t Shy Away From Oil
Many are afraid of using oil-based products on their skin for fear of breakouts, but rest assured using oil-based products do not cause acne breakouts. Using an oil-based natural mineral foundation is perfect for fall and winter skin as compared to using a matte powder based foundation. The oil can help seal in moisture as well as give your face a dewy glow.
Tip #4: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
If you haven’t guessed already a common theme for the best skin this fall in winter is the need to moisturize. There are many moisturizers out there, but the best to use for your skin are the ones that are alcohol-free and contain natural ingredients such as coconut oil. Moisturize from head to toe, but remember to use a different moisturizer on your face from that used on the body. Use a moisturizer under your makeup as well as before bed, after you remove your makeup. Also moisturize your hands and feet before bed to keep them feeling silky smooth.
Tip #5: Don’t Rule Out Exfoliation
Continue to exfoliate during the fall and winter months to remove any dead or dry skin. While you don’t need to exfoliate every day, it is important to exfoliate at least a few times a week. If you notice that your skin is drier than usual, up your use of moisturizer, hydrate from the inside out by making sure you are drinking plenty of water, and exfoliate more often. Exfoliating will help your skin looking healthier and will remove the dead cells that can make your skin look drab.
Tip #6: Change Up Your Skincare Treatments
If you receive regular skin care treatments it may be time to change up the types of treatments you receive. Talk to your skincare specialist about the best treatments to receive during fall and winter to keep your skin looking healthy. Also find out what products you can start incorporating into your routine such as retinol to help even out your complexion and remove dark spots.
Tip #7: Start Using a Humidifier
When the air becomes drier it inevitably dries out your skin. Using a humidifier in your home can increase the moisture in the air and help keep your skin from becoming overly dry. You may even sleep better at night with the addition of a humidifier.
